My very favourite Artist; Gerhard Richter / Mi artista favorito: Gerhard Richter

El 27 de Febrero de 2008, fue cuando descubrí a uno de mis artistas favoritos de todos los tiempos, Gerhard Richter. No olvidaré cuando vi este cuadro, su nombre: Kerze (Candle) el año en que la pinto 1983. Pura coincidencia pero por razones personales me marcó. Como me marco el realismo de la imagen, tuve que mirar la descripción para convencerme de que no era una foto.

It was the 27th of February 2008 when I discover one of my favourite artists: Gerhard Richter. I will not forget the moment I saw that painting, its name: Kerze, (Candle) the year it was painted 1983. It was pure coincidence but for personal reasons it marked me with the same intensity that I got impressed by the image realism. I had to look to the description twice to convince myself that it was not a photograph.

Nacio en Dresden, Alemania, en 1932. Su familia dejo la ciudad para vivir en el campo en periodo de guerra pero él retornó en 1951 para estudiar en la academia de Bellas Artes. Aún conservadora en muchos aspectos la Academia parecía liberal en comparación con las autoridades del régimen soviético de Alemania del Este.

He was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1932. His family left the city to live a quieter life during the war time. But he came back on 1951 to start his studies in the Fine Art Academy. While traditional and in many ways conservative, the Academy at first seemed liberal in comparison with the agenda of the Soviet authorities in East Germany – an agenda that was increasingly imposed on the Academy during Richter's time there.

La formación en la academia le sirvió como base para el hiperrealismo de su obra posterior basada en fotografías. En su último año pinto como parte de su tesis the Joy of Life. Este era una descripción la alegría con la que el sistema socialista había sido liberado del fascismo. Más conoce a Arnold Bode y descubre el expresionsmo de Pollock y la obra de Lucio Fontana.

His formation in the Fine Arts Academy was very useful to found the hyperrealism that we will find in his later work. In this last year of his studies, as part of his final project he painted a mural for the German Hygiene Museum. With the theme of the Joy of Life the mural is described by Elger as "the celebration of a joyful socialist system liberated from fascism"

Later he meets Arnold Bode and he discovers Pollock´s Expressionism and Lucio Fontana´s work.

A principios de los 60 se desplaza a Alemania Occidental y se instala en Dusseldorf. Esta época esta fuertemente influenciada por el Pop Art, especialmente Warhol y Lichtenstein. Pero Richter se fue alejando cada vez mas de este movimiento tan positivo y comercial ya que necesitaba otros medios para expresar su visión del mundo.

In the early 60s he moves to West Germany and he lives in Dusseldorf. This period is very influenced by the Pop Art, especially by Warhol and Lichtenstein. But Richter detached his art from the optimism and commercial art to utilize other media to express his vision of the world.

En este momento comienza a pintar fotografías que realiza en la vida cotidiana. Creando obras hiperrealistas de una calidad incomparable. No solo por su ejecución si no por el ángulo con el que la fotografía está tomada, la luz y/o su encuadre.

At this moment he starts painting about photographs that he makes in his day to day life. He created hyper-realism with an incomparable quality.

Normalmente no sigo la cronología de un artista de una manera tan rigurosa pero creo que hacerlo con Richter ayudar a admirar su obra todavía mas si se esto es posible. 

Usually, when I write about an artist I do not follow a chronological pattern but I think with Richter it helps to admire and understand his work even more. 

A principios de los 70 comienza a experimentar con el arte abstracto. Richter dice asi: “Cuando describimos un proceso, o hacemos una factura, o una fotografía de un árbol, creamos modelos; sin ellos no sabríamos nada de la realidad y seríamos animales. Las imágenes abstractas son modelos ficticios, porque hacen una realidad visible que no podemos ver ni describir, pero cuya existencia podemos postular”

In the early 70´s he starts to experiment with abstract art. Richter says the following: “When we describe a process, or make out an invoice, or photograph a tree, we create models; without them we would know nothing of reality and would be animals. Abstract pictures are fictive models, because they make visible a reality that we can neither see nor describe, but whose existence we can postulate” 

Finalmente en los 80 es cuando se consolida como artista internacional. Con exhibiciones en la Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, diversas Bienales, comisiones por Marian Goodman y un incontable número de premios.

Finally in the 80´s is when his career is consolidated. Exhibitions in the Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou few Biennales, exhibitions by Maria Goodman and uncountable amount of awards.

Yo destacaría dos aspectos de este artista; primero, su constante evolución y experimentación con distintas técnicas y segundo, su facilidad para cambiar de un estilo a otro sin dificultad. Sólo él puede estar pintando una de sus fotografías y horas después este terminando uno de sus abstractos.

I´d like to highlight two aspects about this artist; one is constant evolution and permanent experimentation with different techniques and his ability to change style without difficulty. Only he is able to be painting one of his photographs and few hours later one of his abstracts.

Sus velas: Por la luz y el realismo de estas pinturas. En esta categoría también incluiría las calaveras, parecen pinturas flamencas del sigo XVII. 

His candles: for its realism in these paintings, also include the skulls, they remind me to the Flemish paintings from the XVII century.

Henri Matisse: The cut outs

Esta semana he aprovechado para hacer una visita a uno de mis sitios favoritos del mundo; The Tate Modern. 

No me canso de visitarla. Ya sea para disfrutar de sus exposiciones temporales como de su colección permanente, podría pasarme horas escribiendo sobre este lugar. 

Pero hoy no es la idea. Hoy quiero rendir un pequeño homenaje a un gran genio Henri Matisse.

This week I went to visit one of my favourite places in the world; The Tate Modern. I never get tired of this place. I love their permanent exhibitions as much as the temporary ones.

But today my idea is not to talk about the Tate. 

Today I want to pay a little tribute to one art genius from the twentieth century: Henri Matisse.

A Matisse no le hace falta introducción. Es la figura clave del fauvismo y pionero en las vanguardias del siglo XX. 

El movimiento fauvista está caracterizado por la intensidad de sus pinceladas, colores desmesurados y la expresión de las emociones. 

Viene del francés, Fauve, que quiere decir bestia.

Matisse does not need introduction. He is a key personality in the Fauvism movement and a pioneer in the Avant garde in the 20^th century. 

The Fauvism movement is characterized by its intensity in the strokes, their disproportioned colours and the expressions for emotions. It comes from the French word fauve, and it mean beast.

Personalmente lo que más me gusta son sus dibujos. Pero reconozco que su obra en general es digna de admiración.

Personally, his drawings are my favourite. But I do recognise that is whole work is admirable.

Cerca de los ochenta años de edad Matisse fue diagnosticado de un cáncer al que sobrevivió milagrosamente. En silla de ruedas y con la salud bastante deteriorada Henri Matisse no podía pintar más, su cuerpo no acompañaba a su creatividad. 

Pero esto no supuso un límite para el artista si no una nueva oportunidad de crear algo completamente revolucionario que serviría para las siguientes generaciones. 

Siendo una vez más influencia en técnicas de color y representación en movimientos posteriores como el Pop Art.

When he was about eighty years old, Matisse was diagnosed with Cancer. It was a miracle that he survived. In his wheelchair and with a very deteriorated health Henri Matisse was unable to paint, his body could not sustain his creativity. 

But this was not limiting him, it gave him a new opportunity to create something revolutionary and inspirational for future generations. Being, once again, an influence in colour techniques and representation in artistic movements such as the Pop Art.

Como dice su biznieta, Sophie Matisse "Sintió la marcha del reloj, por así decirlo, y no tenía mucho más tiempo para decir lo que quería o hacer lo que deseaba"

As his great-gand-daughter, Sophie Matisee said “he felt the clock ticking, then he did realise that he had not much time left to saying what he wanted to say, or doing what he wanted to do”

  

Así que empezó a recortar papel y formar maravillosas composiciones. 

De esta manera Matisse elegía cuidadosamente los materiales y los colores de la obra. Ayudado por su musa Lydia Delectorskaya, juntos componían sus obras.

So he started to cut paper and make beautiful shapes to make stunning compositions. Matisse chose carefully the colours and the material for his work assisted by his muse Lydia Delectorskaya.

La calidad de la obra expuesta es impresionante y no solo por su expresividad si no por el sentimiento de superación. El genio consigue que sólo observando su obra uno mismo salga cargado de entusiasmo. La sensacion que me genera es que cuanto más veo mas quiero saber sobre esta época del artista, como componía, cuales era sus rutinas, sus angustias sus preocupaciones… Es inspirador el su afán por crear.

The quality of the exhibited work is evident and not only for his vitality, but for the feeling of achievement that he transmits. At the end of the exhibition you feel like you want to learn more and see more; about this period in his life, his methodology in the composition, his routines, his anxieties and his worries… 

His determination to carry on with the creative process it is just inspiring. 

Lo que Matisse transmite en este periodo de su vida es una energía indescriptible. Es la creatividad encarnada con una sensibilidad infinita. Sus críticos contemporáneos le tacharon de infantil, y solo hasta finales de siglo XX no se llegaron a valorar los recortes como debian ser valorados.

What Matisse transmits in this period of his life is about energy impossible to describe. It is the creativity combine with an infinite sensitiveness. His contemporary critics pointed his art as childish and worthless. Only at the end of the 20^th Century the cut outs were appreciated as they were deserved to be.

Una de las obras que más me llamó la atención es Desnudo Azul número 4. Es una de sus obras más conocidas. Y para mí, una de las más significativas. 

Es una serie de cuatro desnudos, donde una silueta de una mujer está representada en azul. Número cuatro es la obra que empezó la primera pero acabo la última. 

En los detalles y en comparación con las otras tres, podemos ver que Matisse trabajo intensamente en esta silueta para conseguir exactamente lo que buscaba.

One of the pieces that grabbed my attention in the exhibition was Blue Nude IV. It is one of his most popular pieces. I think, one of the most relevant too. There are four nude portraits, representing a blue women´s shape. 

Number four was the first that he started but the last one to be finished. In its details you can see the amount of work and effort that the artist spent to find what he was looking for.

Podemos ver que está compuesta por pequeños tozos de papel en vez de recorte en una sola pieza como sus otras tres hermanas. Y los trazos de carbón señalan el intenso trabajo que supuso esculpir las curvas de esta mujer.

Looking closely we can see that this is the only portrait that is composed by additions of little pieces of paper instead of the one single piece composition like the other three.

El caracol y las ilustraciones de su libro Jazz son otras de las obras que merecen ser observadas con tiempo.

The Snail and the illustrations from the book Jazz, among others, are pieces that need to be contemplated with time and into detail.

Pero este pequeño homenaje solo tiene le intención de despertar el interés del lector por la obra de este genio ya que es imposible describir y resumir la genialidad de su trabajo en unas cuantas líneas.

But this little homage only has one goal; to awake the interest of the reader about this genial work. Since it is impossible to transmit and summarize the beauty in his pieces just in few lines

Cultural weekend in the French Provence // Fin de semana cultural en la Provenza francesa

Si hay un sitio en este mundo al que me gusta ir es a La Provenza Francesa. En especial a las tres As: Avignon, Aix-en-Provence y Arles. No sé si será el clima, la comida o sus campos de lavanda pero es un lugar que siempre ha visto crecer a grandes artistas. Según los impresionistas, el sureste de Francia era un lugar maravilloso por los colores y diversidad de paisajes y en eso estoy completamente de acuerdo.

If there is a place that I enjoy going, it is the French Provence. Especially going to the three A´s; Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Arles. I don´t know what is the reason, maybe the weather, the food or the fields covered in lavender… but it is a place that has brought up countless number of artists. The Impressionists said that the South East of France was a wonderful place for its colors and the diversity in its landscapes and I agree.

Y se dice que Van Gogh vendió solo una pintura durante su vida: « Vignes Rouges d’Arles » -Uvas rojas de Arles-.

And it has been said that Van Gogh sold only one painting while he was alive: « Vignes Rouges d’Arles » - The Red Vineyards in Arles.

El més pasado pasé un fin de semana en la Provenza. Tengo mucha suerte porque suelo ir varias veces al año y eso me da oportunidad de conocer diferentes lugares, a cada cual más especial. Esta vez aprovechamos para visitar Arles y Baux-en-Provence.

Last month I spent a weekend in Provence. I am very lucky because I get the opportunity to go many times a year. This time I visited Arles and Baux-en-Provence.

En Arles encontré una galería que me enamoró. Su nombre es galería Circa y su web no le hace justicia! El espacio es maravilloso, combinan muebles de diseño con pintura y escultura.

In Arles I found a gallery that I fell in love with. Its name is Circa, here is the link to the gallery but it is not very good and the space is more beautiful if you go in person.

Uno de los artistas que mas me llamó la atención de la galería fue Georges Autard. Este artista nació en Cannes en 1951 y es profesor de Bellas Artes en la universidad de Luminy, en Marsella. 

One of the artists that I found interesting was Georges Autard. He was born in Cannes in 1951, he is a Fine Arts lecturer in the University of Luminy in Marseille.

Es un pintor local, no muy conocido fuera del sur de Francia, pero me encantó su obra por la fuerza en el trazo y los colores vivos, especialmente de su serie Noirs. Si queréis saber más de él aquí está la web de una de las galerías que le comisionan: Alma.

He is a local painter and not known outside of the south of France, but I liked his work for the intensity in his strokes and the colours in his work, especially in his series Noir. Here is more information about him and another gallery where his is commissioned. Alma Gallery.

El segundo artista es Franck Petit, es escultor. Lo que me gustó de este artista es la delicadeza de sus esculturas de la serie Déséquilibre. Estas figuras son de una sutilidad maravillosa, y contrariamente a lo que dice su nombre, sus proporciones crean una sensación de perfecto equilibrio y constante movimiento.

The second artist was Franck Petit. He is sculptor and what I like the most from him was the delicacy in his series Déséquilibre. These sculptures are very delicate and its proportions create a feeling of perfect balance and constant movement. 

Ya en Les-Baux-de-Provence nos recomendaron ir a “Carrières de Lumières” (La cantera de las luces). Son antiguas canteras que se usaron para extraer piedra caliza, muy utilizada a principios del siglo XX. En 1935, cando los materiales de construcción cambiaron, estas canteras quedaron en desuso.

When we arrived to Les-Baux-de-Provence they recommended us to visit “Carrièresde Lumières”. These are old quarries that were created over the years for extracting white limestone used in the construction of the Chateau and Les Baux. In 1935, economic competition from modern materials led to the closure of the quarries.

En 2011, El ayuntamiento de Les-Baux-de-Provence pidió la colaboración de la fundación Culturespaces y así poner en marcha este precioso proyecto. La fundación Culturespaces es una fundación que se dedica a crear proyectos que facilitan el acceso a la cultura a niños con dificultades familiares y que están enfermos u hospitalizados. Su misión es poner a disposición de estos niños el acceso a la historia y el arte mediante visitas a museos o patrimonio de bien cultural.

In 2011, the town of Les Baux de Provence asked Culturespaces to take over management of its shows at the Carrières du Val d’Enfer quarry under a public service concession agreement. The site will reopen its doors under its new name “Carrières de Lumières”. The mission of the Culturespaces Foundation is to promote access to the arts and cultural heritage for children and teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who are ill, hospitalised or disabled. 

La iniciativa es maravillosa y la instalación es increíble. La idea de aprovechar el espacio y las superficies de la cantera es única, se proyectan imágenes con una temática inspirada en la obra de un artista. 

It is a wonderful initiative and the installation is just incredible. The idea of utilizing the space and the surface in the quarry is unique; the images are projected to represent a theme which is inspired in one artist´s work.

Estas imágenes inicialmente hablan sobre el contexto histórico y la obra que influenció al artista y te hacen sentir que estas ahí en ese momento. Gradualmente estas imágenes cambian para mostrar el trabajo del artista en sí, permitiéndote sumergirte en su obra al cien por cien.

These images talk about the historical context and the influencers for the artist and gradually changing to projections to the artist´s work.

Yo atendí a la de Kilmt, y tengo que decir que la experiencia es única. Las proyecciones están coordinadas a la perfección con la música y la acústica del lugar es simplemente espectacular.

I saw the performance inspired in Klimt´s work. I must say that the experience is unique. The images are perfectly coordinated with the music and the acoustic in the venue complements it flawlessly.

La iniciativa apoya una causa preciosa y nos da la excusa perfecta para organizar un fin de semana cultural en la Provenza. La exposición esta hasta enero de 2015 así que no te la puedes perder.
