Talking about Conceptual Art with Braco Dimitrijević / Hablando de arte conceptual con Braco Dimitrijević

Finalmente puedo decir que soy fan del Arte Conceptual. Y no todo el mundo puede decir lo mismo… Este método era fundamental para el artista Sol LeWitt. Su definición de Arte conceptual es la siguiente:

En el arte conceptual la idea o concepto es el aspecto mas importante de la obra. Cuando un artista usa la forma conceptual del arte, significa que toda la planificación y las decisiones son tomadas antes y la ejecución de dicha obra es solo una función. La idea se transforma en la máquina que crea el arte.

Finally I can say that I am a conceptual art fan. Not everyone can say the same… This method was fundamental to American artist Sol Lewitt´s definition of Conceptual art, one of the first to appear in print:

In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work. When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.

Hay gente que mantiene la teoría de que Marcel Duchamp fue el precursor de este movimiento con sus redy-mades. Y yo lo comparto, Duchamp abrió el debate de lo que es arte y lo que no a nivel estético.

I share the theory that Marcel Duchap was the precursor of this artistic movement with his ready-mades. We can say that Duchamp, at least open the debate about what is art and what is not.

El arte conceptual vendría a ser la máxima forma de expresión del artista escapando de los aspectos meramente decorativos y estéticos. Los más críticos con este movimiento frivolizan con el hecho de que cualquiera puede poner un orinal en un pedestal y convertirlo en obra de arte. Pero en mi opinión, una buena obra tiene que transmitir el mensaje o mejor dicho una sensación con la menor parafernalia.

Conceptual Art could be the most expressing way for the artist to generate art. By escaping from the decorative and esthetical aspects, the artist focuses just in the idea. Some of the critics of this movement can argue that anyone one can put a urinal in a pedestal and call it “art” but in my opinion.  But in my opinion, a good artwork needs to transmit the message or, a feeling without all the superficial paraphernalia.

La semana pasada tuve la suerte, de conocer a Braco Dimitrijevic. Braco además de ser una interesantísima persona. Es uno de los primeros artistas que emirgieron en los anios 60 desde Europa del Este. Por no decir el primero.

Last week I was very lucky having the opportunity of meeting an very well-known Croat  Conceptual artist Braco Dimitrijevic. In addition to his amazing personality, Braco is a pioneer for his contemporaries.

Hijo de Vojo Dimitrijevic (reconocido pintor Bosnio), Braco empezó a la temprana edad de 10 años. Con sólo hablar con él unos minutos te das cuenta que pudo disfrutar de una educación privilegiada que le ha permitido formarse como artista en La Academia de Bellas Artes de Zagrev y en la Saint Martins School in Londres. Es un artista polivalente que además de dominar la fotografía en el arte conceptual cultiva la escritura y el video.

He is the son of a consolidated Bosnian artist, Vojo Dimitrijevic. Braco started to paint in a very early stage of his life, at the age of ten. You only need few minutes talking to him to realize that he has enjoyed a privileged education.  He got his Art degree in the Fine Arts academy in Zagrev and later on complete is education in Saint Martin’s School in London. He is a multi-disciplinary artist who dominates photography as well as writing or painting. 

 

Diríamos que la obra que causo un punto de inflexión en su carrera es casual-passers-by. Donde mediante un proceso de elección completamente aleatoria escogió a un grupo de personal a las que les dio una importancia mediática a nivel líder político. Grandes posters fueron colgados en las fachadas de importantes museos incluso en autobuses públicos a modo de banners publicitarios. Serota adquirio parte de la serie para la colección de la TATE y tb fue seleccionado para la bienal de Venecia.

We can say that the tipping point in his career was with the series of casual passers-by, in which gigantic photo portraits of anonymous people were displayed on prominent facades and billboards in European and American cities. The artist also mimicked other ways of glorifying important persons by building monuments to passers-by and installing memorial plaques in honour of anonymous citizens.

Serota acquired part of these series for the TATE permanent collection. Over the past forty years he has exhibited extensively all over the world. His solo shows have included venues such as Tate Gallery and ICA in London and Museum Ludwig in Cologne among others.

 

Pero su serie de Trípticos llamada Triptychos Post Historicus es la que más me gusta. En esta serie utiliza piezas de arte, en su mayoría cuadros, para combinarlos con objetos de la vida diaria como Armarios, Bombillas o mobiliario. El tercer elemento que compone el triptco es un alimento, representando algo perecedero.

But hisTriptychos Post Historicus series are my favourite. In these one, Braco select Old Masters works such as Magritte or Turner and combines them with everyday objects (Covert, lamps or Chairs), and fruit.

A principios de los ’80, Braco Dimitrijevic, comenzó una serie de instalaciones donde animales salvajes se confrontan con objetos artísticos. Ambos elementos elementos unen dos modelos culturales, el occidental y el ofrecido por otras culturas que viven en armonía con la naturaleza.

In the early 1980s, Braco Dimitrijevic started making installations in which wild animals confront artifacts and works of art, thus joining two cultural models, the occidental model and the model offered by other cultures that live in greater harmony with nature.

Hablando de su arte en la cena le pregunte como se las arregló para conseguir prestadas las obras. Y me contesto: Tomando muchas cafés con directores de museos que no llevaban a nada en un principio. Pero que una vez comenzó y viendo los resultados ha tenido incluso ofertas para hacer más.

Según el la que más ha disfrutado haciendo es la de Turner en la tate. Dice que el olor de la pina todavía lo recuerda en toda la galería.

Talking about his artworks, I asked him how he managed to borrow such important pieces from the museums. He answered – Having an endless amount of coffees with the directors of the galleries. - But he mentioned that, once they saw the result they actually offer them to him!

He commented me that he really enjoyed the picture with the Turner and the two pineapples. It was the most expensive piece of art at the moment in the TATE and he can remember perfectly the smell of the fruit in the room.

Y es que si algo se puede decir de Braco es que es una maravillosa persona, tremendamente amigable e interesante.  Ahora solo espero que la oportunidad de volver a disfrutar de su conversación pronto.

And if there is something that I can remark from Braco is his amazing personality, so friendly and interesting. Now I just hope I have the opportunity to see him and enjoy his conversation very soon.
