Las estrellas del rock tambien coquetean con el arte. Rock stars also flirt with arts!

El fin de semana pasado pase por la Halcyon Gallery, en Londres. Estaban exponiendo la última colección de Bob Dylan. Mood Swings. Es bastante interesante y se aprecia un Bob Dylan más maduro y cuidadoso con la obra. 

Last weekend I passed by the Halcyon Gallery in London. They were showing the last art work from Dylan; Mood Swings. It is very interesting and you can appreciate a more mature Dylan and careful with his work. 

Esto me hizo pensar, y después de navegar por la red he visto que no soy la primera que se plantea este tema: Las estrellas de la música también coquetean con las artes plásticas.

Son numerosos los artistas que no solo con la música desean expresarse,  Bob Dylan, David Bowie o Ronnie Wood son unos de los muchos que se han lanzado a pintar, esculpir o diseñar.

This actually made me think... After searching in the net, I see I am not the only one who about it: Rock stars also flirt with art!

There are few artists that wish to express themselves not only with music, Bob Dylan, David Bowie or Ronnie Wood are some of the many artists that paint, sculpt or design in addition to play music. 

Y yo me pregunto… Y por que no? Esta claro que para brillar en algún genero artístico hay que tener una sensibilidad especial y ese ‘don’ no tiene por que ser solo aplicable a una materia. David Bowie utilizaba la pintura para componer música y parece ser que la combinación de ambas artes le ha funcionado bastante bien. Ya que incluso ha llegado a cautivar a Carlos Saatchi.

And my question is: Why not? It is obvious that to be good in any artistic genre you have to have an especial sensitivity. That gift does not need to be applicable to a single subject. 

David Bowie used to paint to compose music and it seems that the combinations of both skills works really well for him. He even caught Saatchi´s attention. 

Bowie ha creado numerosas obras no solo en pintura, también en escultura, prints (serigrafías) o fotografías. Sus obras son casi can polifaceticas como su obra. Personalmente sus pinturas me recuerdan a Francis Bacon, con colores y trazos fuertes. En sus prints podemos ver un aire mas naive o incluso futurista.
Bowie has worked not just with painting, he also works with sculpture, prints and photos. His work has different influences and they are very different from each other. I find in his paintings influenced by Francis Bacon´s work, with strong colours and strokes. In his prints we can appreciate a more naive character or ever futurist. 

Ronnie, sin embargo utiliza más la pintura como medio de expresión. Ha pintado desde muy joven e incluso llego a estudiar en Ealing College of art. Siempre ha compaginado la musica con la pintura. Aunque como todos bien sabemos ha sido bastante mas conocido por su musica. (Para los mas despistados: Ronnie is componente de los Rolling Stones!)

On the other hand, Ronnie paints as a way to express himself. He has painted since we was very young and he even studied in Ealing College of Art. He always combined his two passions, music and painting. Although, as everyone knows he has been better know by his music! 

Aun asi siempre nos puede quedar la duda sobre la valoración económica de estos trabajos se merecen las cantidades de dinero por las que han sido pagadas? Tienen la calidad de artística o, por el contrario el precio se genera en base a lo que rodea a la idea de obtener algo en exclusiva de uno de nuestros ídolos?

Se despierta el debate en general dentro del arte contemporáneo donde multitud de veces se critica el hecho de si pertenecía a una colección u a otra, o que ciertas personas, que a veces ni siquiera pertenecen al mundo del arte, esten interesadas en la obra, su precio o prestigio en el mercado se distorsiona considerablemente dejando a un lado la relevancia de la obra en si.

Pero, no es el arte contemporáneo el arte de la época en la que vivimos? Y por ello, no necesitamos un mercado que necesite crear tendencias y nuevas corrientes artísticas? Si es asi, por que no disfrutar de las obras creadas ya sean por motivos artísticos o comerciales. Al final solo el tiempo determinara quien es quien y quien merece el reconocimiento. Mientras disfrutemos de ello! 

But, the doubt about the economic value of these pieces is always in doubt. Are they worth as much as the market says? Do they have quality, or their astronomic prices are generated by the idea of owning exclusively something from one of our most admired rock stars? 

Here starts the debate in contemporary art. Where many times the fact that a piece of art was part of some specific collections was increasing their value. Or the fact that, some people, sometimes not even related to the art world, are interested in a piece of art. This can changes the prices considerably leaving the actual art work on the side. 

But, is not contemporary art the art of the time that we are all living? And therefore, don´t you need a maker that set trends and new movements? If so, why don´t we enjoy the art work and we forget about whether the artist´s intention is commercial or artistic? At the end, only time will determine who really deserves recognition. Let´s enjoy it in the meantime!!!
