Henri Matisse: The cut outs

Esta semana he aprovechado para hacer una visita a uno de mis sitios favoritos del mundo; The Tate Modern. 

No me canso de visitarla. Ya sea para disfrutar de sus exposiciones temporales como de su colección permanente, podría pasarme horas escribiendo sobre este lugar. 

Pero hoy no es la idea. Hoy quiero rendir un pequeño homenaje a un gran genio Henri Matisse.

This week I went to visit one of my favourite places in the world; The Tate Modern. I never get tired of this place. I love their permanent exhibitions as much as the temporary ones.

But today my idea is not to talk about the Tate. 

Today I want to pay a little tribute to one art genius from the twentieth century: Henri Matisse.

A Matisse no le hace falta introducción. Es la figura clave del fauvismo y pionero en las vanguardias del siglo XX. 

El movimiento fauvista está caracterizado por la intensidad de sus pinceladas, colores desmesurados y la expresión de las emociones. 

Viene del francés, Fauve, que quiere decir bestia.

Matisse does not need introduction. He is a key personality in the Fauvism movement and a pioneer in the Avant garde in the 20^th century. 

The Fauvism movement is characterized by its intensity in the strokes, their disproportioned colours and the expressions for emotions. It comes from the French word fauve, and it mean beast.

Personalmente lo que más me gusta son sus dibujos. Pero reconozco que su obra en general es digna de admiración.

Personally, his drawings are my favourite. But I do recognise that is whole work is admirable.  

 

Pero esta exposición se centra en la obra realizada en los últimos años de vida del artista. Sus recortes.

Cerca de los ochenta años de edad Matisse fue diagnosticado de un cáncer al que sobrevivió milagrosamente. En silla de ruedas y con la salud bastante deteriorada Henri Matisse no podía pintar más, su cuerpo no acompañaba a su creatividad. 

Pero esto no supuso un límite para el artista si no una nueva oportunidad de crear algo completamente revolucionario que serviría para las siguientes generaciones. 

Siendo una vez más influencia en técnicas de color y representación en movimientos posteriores como el Pop Art.

When he was about eighty years old, Matisse was diagnosed with Cancer. It was a miracle that he survived. In his wheelchair and with a very deteriorated health Henri Matisse was unable to paint, his body could not sustain his creativity. 

But this was not limiting him, it gave him a new opportunity to create something revolutionary and inspirational for future generations. Being, once again, an influence in colour techniques and representation in artistic movements such as the Pop Art.

Como dice su biznieta, Sophie Matisse "Sintió la marcha del reloj, por así decirlo, y no tenía mucho más tiempo para decir lo que quería o hacer lo que deseaba"

As his great-gand-daughter, Sophie Matisee said “he felt the clock ticking, then he did realise that he had not much time left to saying what he wanted to say, or doing what he wanted to do”

  

Así que empezó a recortar papel y formar maravillosas composiciones. 

De esta manera Matisse elegía cuidadosamente los materiales y los colores de la obra. Ayudado por su musa Lydia Delectorskaya, juntos componían sus obras.

So he started to cut paper and make beautiful shapes to make stunning compositions. Matisse chose carefully the colours and the material for his work assisted by his muse Lydia Delectorskaya.

La calidad de la obra expuesta es impresionante y no solo por su expresividad si no por el sentimiento de superación. El genio consigue que sólo observando su obra uno mismo salga cargado de entusiasmo. La sensacion que me genera es que cuanto más veo mas quiero saber sobre esta época del artista, como componía, cuales era sus rutinas, sus angustias sus preocupaciones… Es inspirador el su afán por crear.

The quality of the exhibited work is evident and not only for his vitality, but for the feeling of achievement that he transmits. At the end of the exhibition you feel like you want to learn more and see more; about this period in his life, his methodology in the composition, his routines, his anxieties and his worries… 

His determination to carry on with the creative process it is just inspiring. 

Lo que Matisse transmite en este periodo de su vida es una energía indescriptible. Es la creatividad encarnada con una sensibilidad infinita. Sus críticos contemporáneos le tacharon de infantil, y solo hasta finales de siglo XX no se llegaron a valorar los recortes como debian ser valorados.

What Matisse transmits in this period of his life is about energy impossible to describe. It is the creativity combine with an infinite sensitiveness. His contemporary critics pointed his art as childish and worthless. Only at the end of the 20^th Century the cut outs were appreciated as they were deserved to be.

Una de las obras que más me llamó la atención es Desnudo Azul número 4. Es una de sus obras más conocidas. Y para mí, una de las más significativas. 

Es una serie de cuatro desnudos, donde una silueta de una mujer está representada en azul. Número cuatro es la obra que empezó la primera pero acabo la última. 

En los detalles y en comparación con las otras tres, podemos ver que Matisse trabajo intensamente en esta silueta para conseguir exactamente lo que buscaba.

One of the pieces that grabbed my attention in the exhibition was Blue Nude IV. It is one of his most popular pieces. I think, one of the most relevant too. There are four nude portraits, representing a blue women´s shape. 

Number four was the first that he started but the last one to be finished. In its details you can see the amount of work and effort that the artist spent to find what he was looking for.

Podemos ver que está compuesta por pequeños tozos de papel en vez de recorte en una sola pieza como sus otras tres hermanas. Y los trazos de carbón señalan el intenso trabajo que supuso esculpir las curvas de esta mujer.

Looking closely we can see that this is the only portrait that is composed by additions of little pieces of paper instead of the one single piece composition like the other three.

El caracol y las ilustraciones de su libro Jazz son otras de las obras que merecen ser observadas con tiempo.

The Snail and the illustrations from the book Jazz, among others, are pieces that need to be contemplated with time and into detail.

Pero este pequeño homenaje solo tiene le intención de despertar el interés del lector por la obra de este genio ya que es imposible describir y resumir la genialidad de su trabajo en unas cuantas líneas.

But this little homage only has one goal; to awake the interest of the reader about this genial work. Since it is impossible to transmit and summarize the beauty in his pieces just in few lines
