Sensing Spaces – Late evening in the Royal Academy // Sensing Spaces – Una noche en la Royal Academy

Si hay algo que me gusta de Londres son sus Late evenings events. Un día por semana los museos aprovechan para arañar unas horas a la semana y abren sus puertas al público hasta más tarde de lo habitual.

If there is something I enjoy in London are there late evening events. Once a week most of the museums in the city open their doors to the visitors later than usual.

Concretamente la Royal Academy organiza eventos los viernes. Además de poder disfrutar de una buena exhibición también ofrecen espectáculos de Jazz en vivo, copas al aire libre (siempre que el tiempo lo permita) o cenar en el restaurante del museo.

The Royal Academy organizes its events on Fridays. So, in addition to the pleasure of enjoying the artwork at a later hour than usual, you can also enjoy live Jazz music, drinks in the courtyard or a nice dinner in the restaurant.

El viernes pasado estuve en Sensing Spaces. Esta exposición trata sobre la arquitectura, pero trata el tema de una manera diferente. 

Last Friday, I went to see Sensing Spaces. What I found the most interesting in this exhibition was the fact that architecture is treated with a different perspective.

Su comisaria, Kate Goodwin, quería que el espectador interactuase de manera directa con la obra. Pudiendo acceder a ella y, como bien dice su nombre, sentir el espacio. La exposición consiste en la obra de 7 arquitectos. Todos ellos han creado una pequeña estructura inspirada en proyectos previos. Reemplazando así a las clásicas maquetas y planos que normalmente vemos en exposiciones normales.

Its curator, Kate Goodwin, wanted the spectator to be involved in the artwork interacting directly with it, as its name says: sensing the spaces. The exhibition consists in the work of seven architects. All of them have created a little structure that is inspired in previous projects. Models and plans that are commonly displayed in most of the exhibitions about Architecture, here are replaced by real structures.  

Lo especial de las noches de viernes es que además de poder ver la exposición mas tarde de lo normal, la academia organiza todo un evento. Nosotros en Sensing Spaces pudimos disfrutar de un Gin & Tonic patrocinado por Fever Tree, artistas esporádicos que proponían hacer meditación con cerámica o crear un poema, música en vivo y un catering que se inspiro en la arquitectura para ofrecer una bolsita de lo más curiosa. 

The most special thing form the Friday evening is that you not only enjoy a good exhibition late in the evening the RA also organizes an event. This time we could enjoy a nice Gin & Tonic sponsored by Fever Tree, Pop Artists that invited us to meditate with clay or create a poem, live music and a funky catering.

El catering se llamaba AVM curiosities y habían creado una arena comestible a base de galletas de jengibre, un mármol de Chocolate y vainilla y unas piedras de chocolate también pero cubiertas de caramelo. Vamos que me lo pase como una enana!

The catering was called AVM curiosities. They offered edible sand made of ginger biscuit, chocolate and vanilla marble stone and little chocolate pebbles cover in candy. I must confess that I really enjoyed it!

Y ya centrándome en lo que es la obra expuesta. Me gustaría destacar los tres estudios / arquitectos que más me gustaron:

And now, focusing again in main objective of the exhibition: The Architecture. I would like to make a remark on my top three Architecs / studios from the exhibition:

En tercer lugar: Pezo von Ellrichshausen. Chilenos de Origen. Han trabajado con proyectos en EEUU, Portugal Chile y España. Su obra más conocida es la Casa Poli en Colihumo (Chile) y la Casa Cien, residencia y estudio de la pareja.

Starting at the bottom, but not for that less interesting are Pezo von Ellrichshausen. From Chile. Their work lies at the crossroads between art and architecture with a portfolio that includes installations and houses in Chile, USA, Portugal and Spain. Their best known works are the Poli house in Coliumo, Chile (2005) and their home and studio the Cien house in Concepción, Chile (2011).

 

Su instalación es una estructura de madera de tres columnas en las que unas escaleras de caracol suben hasta el techo de la academia. Es bastante interesante disfrutar de los detalles del techo ya que no siempre se llega a ver la RA desde esta perspectiva.

Their installation is a wooden structure with three columns that have stairs that take you to the top of the room. It is very interesting to look at the details in the RA ceiling since we are not able to see this very often.

En segundo lugar: Li Xiaodong. De origen Chino. Su trabajo incluye el Puente de la Escuela en  Xiashi, China (2009) y la librería de Liyuan, China (2011).

The second place is for Li Xiaodong from China. 

His work includes the Bridge School, Xiashi, China (2009) which won an Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010 and the Liyuan Library, China (2011).

Su instalación es la más impresionante en mi opinión ya que consigue que sientas haberte perdido en un laberinto de arboles.

His installation is the most interesting and impressive because it makes you feel loss in a wood full of trees.

Finalmente, mi favorito: Kengo Kuma, Contrucciones recientes incluyen el centro de turismo de  Asakusa (2012), Sake No Hana, el restaurante japonés en St. James’s, Londres (2007) y próximamente veremos V&A Dundee (en proceso).

Finally my favorite: Kengo Kuma, Japan.  He leads a large practice with a worldwide profile. Recent buildings include the Asakusa Tourist Information Centre (2012), Sake No Hana restaurant interior, St. James’s, London (2007) and the upcoming V&A Dundee (on-going).

 

La sensibilidad y delicadeza con la que se ha ejecutado la obra es excepcional. Kengo Kuma da una gran importancia al `ma´ concepto de vacío en Japonés. Además, crea una atmosfera muy especial con los olores que la madera desprende en la estancia.

The sensitivity and delicacy that the space is created is exceptional. Kengo Kuma gives a lot of importance to the ´ma´ meaning void space in Japanese. Also, he creates a magic atmosphere with the smell from the Tatami wood.

La exposición estará hasta el 6 de abril. Así los que estéis por Londres no tenéis excusa para no ir!!
