Cultural weekend in the French Provence // Fin de semana cultural en la Provenza francesa

Si hay un sitio en este mundo al que me gusta ir es a La Provenza Francesa. En especial a las tres As: Avignon, Aix-en-Provence y Arles. No sé si será el clima, la comida o sus campos de lavanda pero es un lugar que siempre ha visto crecer a grandes artistas. Según los impresionistas, el sureste de Francia era un lugar maravilloso por los colores y diversidad de paisajes y en eso estoy completamente de acuerdo.

If there is a place that I enjoy going, it is the French Provence. Especially going to the three A´s; Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Arles. I don´t know what is the reason, maybe the weather, the food or the fields covered in lavender… but it is a place that has brought up countless number of artists. The Impressionists said that the South East of France was a wonderful place for its colors and the diversity in its landscapes and I agree.

Y se dice que Van Gogh vendió solo una pintura durante su vida: « Vignes Rouges d’Arles » -Uvas rojas de Arles-.

And it has been said that Van Gogh sold only one painting while he was alive: « Vignes Rouges d’Arles » - The Red Vineyards in Arles.

El més pasado pasé un fin de semana en la Provenza. Tengo mucha suerte porque suelo ir varias veces al año y eso me da oportunidad de conocer diferentes lugares, a cada cual más especial. Esta vez aprovechamos para visitar Arles y Baux-en-Provence.

Last month I spent a weekend in Provence. I am very lucky because I get the opportunity to go many times a year. This time I visited Arles and Baux-en-Provence.

En Arles encontré una galería que me enamoró. Su nombre es galería Circa y su web no le hace justicia! El espacio es maravilloso, combinan muebles de diseño con pintura y escultura.

In Arles I found a gallery that I fell in love with. Its name is Circa, here is the link to the gallery but it is not very good and the space is more beautiful if you go in person.

Uno de los artistas que mas me llamó la atención de la galería fue Georges Autard. Este artista nació en Cannes en 1951 y es profesor de Bellas Artes en la universidad de Luminy, en Marsella. 

One of the artists that I found interesting was Georges Autard. He was born in Cannes in 1951, he is a Fine Arts lecturer in the University of Luminy in Marseille.

Es un pintor local, no muy conocido fuera del sur de Francia, pero me encantó su obra por la fuerza en el trazo y los colores vivos, especialmente de su serie Noirs. Si queréis saber más de él aquí está la web de una de las galerías que le comisionan: Alma.

He is a local painter and not known outside of the south of France, but I liked his work for the intensity in his strokes and the colours in his work, especially in his series Noir. Here is more information about him and another gallery where his is commissioned. Alma Gallery.

El segundo artista es Franck Petit, es escultor. Lo que me gustó de este artista es la delicadeza de sus esculturas de la serie Déséquilibre. Estas figuras son de una sutilidad maravillosa, y contrariamente a lo que dice su nombre, sus proporciones crean una sensación de perfecto equilibrio y constante movimiento.

The second artist was Franck Petit. He is sculptor and what I like the most from him was the delicacy in his series Déséquilibre. These sculptures are very delicate and its proportions create a feeling of perfect balance and constant movement. 

Ya en Les-Baux-de-Provence nos recomendaron ir a “Carrières de Lumières” (La cantera de las luces). Son antiguas canteras que se usaron para extraer piedra caliza, muy utilizada a principios del siglo XX. En 1935, cando los materiales de construcción cambiaron, estas canteras quedaron en desuso.

When we arrived to Les-Baux-de-Provence they recommended us to visit “Carrièresde Lumières”. These are old quarries that were created over the years for extracting white limestone used in the construction of the Chateau and Les Baux. In 1935, economic competition from modern materials led to the closure of the quarries.

En 2011, El ayuntamiento de Les-Baux-de-Provence pidió la colaboración de la fundación Culturespaces y así poner en marcha este precioso proyecto. La fundación Culturespaces es una fundación que se dedica a crear proyectos que facilitan el acceso a la cultura a niños con dificultades familiares y que están enfermos u hospitalizados. Su misión es poner a disposición de estos niños el acceso a la historia y el arte mediante visitas a museos o patrimonio de bien cultural.

In 2011, the town of Les Baux de Provence asked Culturespaces to take over management of its shows at the Carrières du Val d’Enfer quarry under a public service concession agreement. The site will reopen its doors under its new name “Carrières de Lumières”. The mission of the Culturespaces Foundation is to promote access to the arts and cultural heritage for children and teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who are ill, hospitalised or disabled. 

La iniciativa es maravillosa y la instalación es increíble. La idea de aprovechar el espacio y las superficies de la cantera es única, se proyectan imágenes con una temática inspirada en la obra de un artista. 

It is a wonderful initiative and the installation is just incredible. The idea of utilizing the space and the surface in the quarry is unique; the images are projected to represent a theme which is inspired in one artist´s work.

Estas imágenes inicialmente hablan sobre el contexto histórico y la obra que influenció al artista y te hacen sentir que estas ahí en ese momento. Gradualmente estas imágenes cambian para mostrar el trabajo del artista en sí, permitiéndote sumergirte en su obra al cien por cien.

These images talk about the historical context and the influencers for the artist and gradually changing to projections to the artist´s work.

Yo atendí a la de Kilmt, y tengo que decir que la experiencia es única. Las proyecciones están coordinadas a la perfección con la música y la acústica del lugar es simplemente espectacular.

I saw the performance inspired in Klimt´s work. I must say that the experience is unique. The images are perfectly coordinated with the music and the acoustic in the venue complements it flawlessly.

La iniciativa apoya una causa preciosa y nos da la excusa perfecta para organizar un fin de semana cultural en la Provenza. La exposición esta hasta enero de 2015 así que no te la puedes perder.

Affordable art for beginners // Arte asequible para coleccionistas primerizos

En Londres hay dos ferias que no te debes perder si quieres empezar a coleccionar arte: Art14 y  The Affordable art fair en Battersea. 

Art14 acaba de nacer, 2014 ha sido su segunda edición y su éxito ha indiscutible. La obra de las galerías no ha defraudado a nadie y ha superado unas altas expectativas. Estoy segura de que esta feria va a dar mucho de que hablar en sus siguientes ediciones ya que su propuesta es un soplo de aire fresco a las repetitivas ediciones de Frieze. 

If you want to start collecting art, there are two fairs in London that you cannot miss, Art 14 and The Affordable Art Fair in Battersea. Art14 is very new, 2014 was its second edition and it has been a great success. The artwork has meet high expectations and the critics agree that the fair has brought some fresh air to the art fair scene.  I am very confident that we will talk about this fair in future editions. 

The Affordable Art Fair por el contrario, es una feria ya asentada en la historia artística de Londres. En esta feria hay que buscar, no todas las galerías merecen la pena, pero se pueden encontrar cosas a muy buen precio.

On the other hand, The Affordable Art Fair is a popular event in London. Here you need to find the pieces and not all the galleries are worth it, but if you have the attitude you will find really good bargains.

Empezando por la galería de Tristan Hoare y sus dos proposiciones: 

Starting with Tristan Hoare´s Gallerry and his two propositions:

Alejandro Guijarro y sus pizarras. Ya hable de él en uno de mis primeros posts. Y es que Guijarro promete. Sus pizarras están siendo un éxito, tanto que Charles Saatchi ha comprado seis y las ha estado exhibiendo en su galería por unos meses.

AlejandroGuijarro and his Boards. I wrote about him a couple of years ago in this post. And it is because I truly believe that Guijarro is a big promise in for the contemporary photography. Even Saatchi has surrendered to his art and bought six of them and exhibited in his gallery in 2013.

Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre: Me encantan sus espacios abandonados, la limpieza y la nitidez de sus imágenes y la originalidad de sus temas. Son Artistas consolidados y un must en fotografía contemporánea.

Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre: I LOVE their abandoned spaces, their neatness of their images and the originality in their theme. They are a must in the contemporary photography. 

Galería Perl Lam. Una de las Art dealers mas in del momento. Podría hacer un post completo sobre sus artistas, cosa que no descarto, sobre todo si tengo la suerte de ir algún día a visitar alguna de sus galerías en Hong Kong, Shanghái o Singapur en persona. Pero por ahora destacamos  sólo Zhu Jinshi. Por la fuerza de sus trazos y la textura de sus obras no deja a nadie indiferente. Simplemente espectacular. 

Perl Lam Gallery, one if the most popular Chinese art dealers at the moment. I could write a whole post just about her artists. I will if I can visit one of her galleries in HK, Shanghai or Singapore. But for the moment I will highlight only one of her numerous artists: Zhu Jinshi. The intensity in his stroke and the texture in his painting leave no one indifferent. It is just spectacular.

Aktis Gallery, es una galería basada en Londres  que está especializada en artistas que emigraron de Asia a Paris a principios del siglo 20th, mayormente rusos. 

Pero a mí me llamo la atención un cuadro de un artista chino, Zao Wou-Ki. Su historia personal es bastante interesante, podéis leer mas aquí. En 1983 exhibe por primera vez su trabajo más maduro caracterizado por una rica y luminosa paleta de colores que expresa los efectos de la luz.

AktisGallery is dedicated to Russian and European art of the twentieth century. Situated in St. James’s, London, it focuses on Russian artists who immigrated to Paris in the first half of the 20th century. 

But the piece what captured my attention was from a Chinese artis: Zao Wou Ki. You can read more about his live here. After travelling and experimenting with other techniques Zao exhibited his mature works in Beijing and Hangzhou for the first time in 1983. His works since are characterised by a rich, bright palette that explore the pure, expressive effects of light.

Y para finalizar en art 14 Rebecca Hossack En esta galería también merece pasar tiempo. Es perfecta si lo que buscas es arte para decorar interiores. No llega a ser muy comercial pero es una obra fácil de colgar en la pared de tu casa.

Finally, Rebecca Hossack. In this gallery we also need to spend some time. It is perfect if you are looking for stuff to decorate your house with style. Is not commercial art but it is art that you want to hang in the wall at home.

En concreto, la obra de Barbara Macfarlane meencanto. Me pareció bastante original e interesante. Pinta espacios abiertos a modo de mapa pero la composición figurativa recuerda a las muestras de Pantone. Aquí una foto de Midtown Red y Midtown Slate.

I really liked Barbara Macfarlane. I think that her art is very original and interesting. She paints open spaces as a map, but its composition resembles to the Pantone samples. Here is a photo of two of her paintings: Midtown Red y Midtown Slate.

Y cambiando de feria, nos vamos a Battersea Park, a la Affordable Art Fair. Lo más interesante es que los precios de la obra expuesta no deben sobre pasar los 3.600.00 euros. Dos galerías a destacar:

Changing location, we move to Battersea Park to The Affordable Art Fair. The most interesting aspect in this fair is that art prices cannot be higher than GBP 3,000.00. Two galleries to remark:

En la galería Francesa Envie D´art comisionan arte de Edouard Buzon. He de confesar que este es un artista que llevo tiempo con él en la cabeza y al ver más de su obra estoy bastante tentada a comprar… 

Ahora lo que toca es ahorrar… El formato, su textura y la intensidad en el color son las características que se aprecian en sus obras.

French gallery Envie D´Art. They were exhibiting Eduard Buzon´s work. I must confess that this is an artist that I saw before and I am very tempted to buy it. 

Now I just have to save for it… The format, the texture and the intensity in the colours that he utilises are the most appreciated characteristics of his art.

Finalmente, en la galería australiana Retrospect Gallery, un artista español, Alberto Sánchez Peinador. Utiliza la misma técnica que Buzon con fotografía color y resina. Pero sus obras son menos abstractas. 

Last but not least, from Australia: RetrospectGallery. A Spanish Artist, Alberto Sánchez Peinador. He utilises a technique very similar to Buzon´s photo modified with resin and pigments. But is art is less abstract and more commercial. 

Personalmente lo clasificaría como arte comercial, pero sin connotación negativa. Es una obra que entra por el ojo a cualquiera, de ahí que la galería haya vendido treinta en un fin de semana… También ideal para decorar y colgarlo en casa.

It is art that everyone likes and therefore the success of his gallery this weekend that sold almost thirty pieces. It is also ideal for decorating and hang it in the wall at home.
